Maximizing Athletics Internships

Your hard work and patience has paid off. You’ve obtained the internship of your dreams! So now what? How do you make sure that you get the most out of the short time you have to spend with the company? The following is a list of tips that will ensure that you maximize your opportunity to excel in sports business.

  • Arrive early and stay late – Remember an internship is like an extended interview. Everything you do will be watched and evaluated. Go the extra mile to impress your co-workers and superiors by arriving on time, even early if possible. When there is extra work to be done and you are asked to stay late, do it! It is easy to go through the motions, but to go above and beyond is critical to getting noticed.
  • Take lots of notes – Your job may require you to do this, but even if it does not make a point of jotting things down throughout the day. This way, at the end of your internship you will have an entire notebook filled with tidbits, which you can refer to later on in your career.
  • Talk to your co-workers – People in sports business are usually very willing to share their advice and expertise with eager interns. A great way to build contacts for your network and learn more about the industry is to make time to talk to the people around you who live and breathe it every day. Ask them to lunch and pick their brain over a sandwich and chips. You will be amazed at how much you can learn!
